Music

Statement of Intent Music

At Christ the King Primary School, it is our intent that we make music an enjoyable learning experience. Our teaching focuses on developing the children’s ability to understand rhythm and follow a beat. Through singing songs, children learn about the structure and organisation of music. We teach them to listen and to appreciate different forms of music. Children develop descriptive language skills in music lessons when learning about how music can represent different feelings, emotions and narratives. We also teach technical vocabulary such as volume, pitch, beat and rhythm and encourage children to discuss music using these terms.

Singing at Christ the King

The school has a well established choir who perform enthusiastically at a variety of events during the school year. This year Year 5 have been involved with Blessed Trinity's Christmas Carol concert, Year 3 and 4 have taken part in the Catholic Singing programme and our KS2 school choir have sang at ELHA spreading Christmas cheer amongst the patients, welcomed our school community to our 'Winter Warmer' with traditional Christmas carols and to finish 2024, our choir sang their heart outs in our annual CTK Christmas Carol concert. A huge well done to all involved

Curriculum Music at Christ the King

Reception, Autumn 1

Reception class have enjoyed the Charanga unit "Me!". The children have enjoyed listening to various musicians from Madness to the Carpenters. They have used their thumbometers to measure their enjoyment of each piece - from a thumbs up, thumbs down and an in-between if they were unsure. They have learnt that rapping is when you speak, rhythmically with music instead of singing and we learnt to rap the nursery rhyme Pat-a-cake, Pat-a-cake Baker's man - all with a grumpy rappers face too.

Reception Class  also enjoyed looking at, and listening to different instruments in our music lessons including the violin, flute, electric piano and a trumpet. We then listen for them in the, listen and appraise part of our lessons.

As we couldn't find a trumpet we found the closest thing, a bugle. We enjoyed playing a few notes and all I can say is when we need musicians for the Christmas Nativity we won't have to look too far.

Year 1 'Hey You!' - Autumn 1

Year 1 have covered the Charanga unit 'Hey You!'. We have listened to and appraised different styles of music, learnt to sing and rap the song 'Hey You!', played glockenspiels to accompany the song and used the glockenspiels to improvise with the song. The following videos show the singing, the playing of glockenspiels, and the song with all the elements for this unit.
