“Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbour to the man who fell among the robbers?” He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.” Luke 10:36-37

Welcome to Year 5 Class

In Year 5, we are taught by Miss Bux and we are supported by Mrs Allan.

In Year 5, we follow the school ethos 'Christ at the Heart of All We Do'.

During your time in year 5, you will grow into an independent learner, aim to be more resourceful and resilient, make new discoveries about the wider world and develop lasting memories!

Examples of our topics in Y5 include; Crime and Punishment, The Mayans, Local history (the Pendle Witches) for history. In geography, we look at climate zones, Brazil and globalisation, trade and economics. We ensure your learning is enhanced by engaging in Enrichment days/Activities. As well as all that, we engage in stimulating activities in our forest school area, making the most of our exciting outdoor learning environment.

In Year 5, we are encouraged to make our writing creative and exciting. We follow the Lancashire English Units and study novels linked to our topics such as: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Legends unit, Earthlings, Macbeth, Kensuke’s Kingdom and the Jabberwocky which inspire our writing further. Additionally, we encourage daily reading to support and scaffold our writing skills, broadening our imaginations!

In maths, we follow the Lancashire Red Rose Maths Mastery Scheme, which deepens our understanding of key concepts.

To support you on your learning journey, we hope that you will receive help from your parents and carers.  They can do this by listening to you read, helping you to learn your spellings by playing games on Spelling Shed (we will have a competitive league going each week!) and by practising times tables on TTRS.

Finally, we use School Jotter to send messages home about what you have been learning and all the fantastic achievements you have made!

We want you to have fun whilst learning!

General Information

Here are a few pieces of useful information:

Reading books

Your child will have a reading book and reading record and it’s really important that they are encouraged to read at home as often as possible.  We want to instil in all our children a love of reading, so it is perfectly fine if they choose to read at home something they particularly like rather than their school reading book.  If your child chooses to do this, please still record their reading into their reading records.

Spellings

Spelling folders will be sent home every Friday. The spellings should be learnt at home throughout the week.

Spelling folders will need to be handed back in every Friday (Hand in Friday – back out the same Friday).  Our weekly spelling test will take place every Friday.

P.E.

P.E. in the Autumn Term is on a Monday and Thursday, please make sure that your child's full indoor and outdoor PE kit is in school at all times.

Snacks

All children are encouraged to bring into school a snack of fresh fruit or vegetables which can be eaten at break time. Could we please remind you that this is fresh fruit and veg only.

Water

The children have all been given a water bottle which they have access to and can refill throughout the day if required. Only water to be drunk in class.

Rucksacks

Just a polite reminder that rucksacks and very large bags are not allowed in school. We simply do not have the room to accommodate them.
